History of the race:

Rotary’s 5K Run to benefit Common Ground Park is in its fifth year. The race has grown from 274 entries in 2005 to 460 in 2008. The event is popular because of the festive atmosphere and great amenities aimed at runners, particularly young runners. Amenities include a live jumbo screen of the finish, glow-bracelets for the runners, finish ribbons for all finishers, a kids’ fun zone, butterfly awards, many door prizes including five IPod Shuffles, quality long sleeve heavy duty cotton shirts, and great refreshments from Publix, Wendy’s, Starbucks and others. Music is provided by 97 Country. Come early and visit the Common Ground playground scheduled to open in December. This is a fun night you will not want to miss.

Lakeland 's Inclusive Play
Experience for Children of Varying Abilities

What is CommonGround?
CommonGround will be Lakeland 's first "inclusive play experience," a term used to describe non-traditional play areas. Children of varying abilities and disabilities will be able to play together side-by-side. CommonGround will be much more than a playground; it will be a play experience designed for families with children of all ages and stages of development. It will be the first public inclusive play experience built in Polk County, providing an outdoor play area for the estimated 15,000 special needs children located in our county.

A big salute is in order for the four Rotary clubs in Lakeland. They recently presented Bill Tinsley and Pam Page of Lakeland's Parks and Recreation Department with a check for $290,000 to fund construction of the Common Ground playground in Lakeland.
The clubs have raised these funds over the last four years by donations from Rotarians as well as fundraising events. One such event is the 5K run each year, that draws up to 500 runners. The next run, scheduled for Feb. 6, is anticipated to provide an additional $10,000 for construction of the park that will serve children of all abilities with an accessible playground that will be a landmark in Lakeland. The target population includes children with and without disabilities who can play side-by-side on "common ground."
